Now hiring a Junior Interior Designer

Job Title: Junior Interior Designer
Location: Hybrid
Job Type: Full-time
Department: Product & Design
Reports To: Director of Design

Job Summary

Foundation Housing is seeking a highly creative, detail-oriented Junior Interior Designer to help shape the visual and spatial identity of our student housing portfolio across the Northeast. This entry-level position offers hands-on involvement in transforming properties into vibrant, functional, and inspiring spaces for students to live and thrive.

You’ll support the interior design process from concept through installation—sourcing furniture and decor, preparing visualizations, managing samples and orders, and helping execute consistent, brand-aligned design across our properties. This role also contributes to the systematization of our design process to help scale our renovations efficiently as we grow from 250 to 2,000 beds.

The ideal candidate is passionate about design, excited to learn, and eager to contribute to a mission-driven real estate platform redefining student living.

Key Responsibilities

Design Execution & Support

  • Assist in designing interior spaces for student housing properties, including furniture layouts, decor schemes, wall art, and color palettes

  • Support the development of mood boards, design decks, and renderings to present and refine concepts

  • Prepare product lists, spec sheets, and order trackers for furniture and decor

  • Maintain design consistency across projects while tailoring aesthetics to each building’s layout and student demographic

Standardization & Design Systems

  • Help build a scalable design catalog and standardized ordering templates to improve repeatability

  • Document furniture and decor packages used in each building for future updates, replacements, and renovations

  • Coordinate with operations to support a smooth handoff from design to procurement, delivery, and installation

Visualization & Software Tools

  • Create visual representations and mockups using SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design platforms

  • Experiment with AI-assisted tools (under guidance) to speed up visualization and concept development workflows

  • Organize digital assets and presentations for internal review and project alignment

Vendor Coordination & Product Sourcing

  • Research and recommend furniture, decor, and materials that align with Foundation’s aesthetic and budget

  • Request and organize samples, catalogs, and swatches for design review

  • Assist with communication and coordination across vendors, installers, and project managers

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Participate in weekly project calls with construction, operations, and leadership to provide design input

  • Conduct virtual walkthroughs or review floor plans to inform layout and design decisions

  • Work closely with the Director of Design and Senior Leadership to ensure every property reflects the Foundation brand

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related design discipline

  • 0–2 years of professional experience in interior design, staging, or spatial planning

  • Proficiency in design tools such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite

  • Strong sense of color, texture, proportion, and space planning

  • Ability to balance creativity with budget-conscious sourcing and decision-making

  • Excellent communication, organization, and follow-through

Preferred

  • Experience in student housing, residential interiors, or hospitality design

  • Familiarity with FF&E procurement processes and vendor coordination

  • Exposure to AI design tools or digital workflow platforms (e.g., Notion, Airtable)

  • Strong portfolio that showcases a vibrant, contemporary design aesthetic

Key Performance Metrics (KPIs)

  • On-time delivery of design packages and order lists per project timeline

  • Accuracy and clarity of visual materials and spec sheets

  • Number of standardized templates and items added to design catalog

  • Design team and project team satisfaction with communication and collaboration

  • Student and leasing team feedback on visual appeal and functionality of finished spaces
